SAHSYSU Enjoys Fruitful Outcomes in Clinical, Teaching and Scientific Research After Half Year’s Opening
The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University(SAHSYSU) is the first major affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Shenzhen. In the past six months, the hospital has opened 39 clinical specialties. The hospital has recently witnessed the opening of obstetrics and neonatology, which would be followed by more clinical specialties such as hemodialysis center and endocrinology. Since the opening of the hospital on May 11 this year, the total number of emergency visits has exceeded 100,000, with over 5,100 accumulated hospitalized patients and 400 daily hospitalized patients. The number of surgical operations has exceeded 1,600, almost 70% of which are third or fourth-grade complex ones.? 485 beds have been opened, taking up 63.8% of the total. It is estimated that in 2019, all the 800 beds will be put into use. As for the origin of the patient flow, patients from Guangming District accounted for 46.6%, 18.5% from Shenzhen, and 34.9% out of Shenzhen. Among the patients from outside Shenzhen, most of them are of severe and complex cases. They are coming specifically for the solution from the elite and renowned experts of SAHSYSU.

The hospital is now staffed by over 1,100 people, including 134 with doctor degrees, 347 with master degrees, and 85 with senior professional titles. Among them, 29 clinical experts are (previously) served as the chairman and deputy chairman of the provincial medical society/Associations and above, 52% of them enjoy long-term (≥1 years) experience of overseas practice, research and further training, 92% of the doctors was introduced from outside Shenzhen.
SAHSYSU opened outpatient clinic, 24-hour emergency department, inpatient, OR and ICU in one go since its opening. Within 2 months since the opening, the hospital has performed quite a few critical and complex operations including D2 radical surgery, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), peritoneal dialysis, WHIPPLE, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) interventional surgery, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), cerebral artery stenting etc., demonstrating that the hospital is developing at a Shenzhen Speed.
SAHSYSU follows a multidisciplinary model (MDT), which conducts a weekly multidisciplinary discussion to provide optimized quality treatment for patients with severe and critical illness. In the future, the hospital will also conduct international multidisciplinary consultation (iMDT) to break the geographic restrictions through the internet, drawing on worldwide experts’ opinion and keeping pace with the forefront of world's medical development.

Sun Yat-sen University set “go into the first phalanx of domestic universities and march into the forefront of world-class universities” as its strategic goal. Its newly established a campus in Shenzhen, one of the three poles of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau is only 1km away from the SAHSYSU, which is the main clinical teaching base of the Shenzhen campus.
Currently SAHSYSU has 25 doctoral supervisors and 25 master supervisors. One person in charge of the national quality course, two winners of the “Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award” and 8 teaching mentors from Sun Yat-sen University. It has enrolled 1 clinical doctoral student, 25 graduate students in scientific research and 17 doctoral students. The hospital will firmly adhere to the principals of "Three Basics, Three Stricts and Three Earlies" in theoretical teaching, trainee, internship and residency, building resident standardized training and specialist training base so as to become the talent pool and cradle for medical elites.

SAHSYSU is positioned as an internationally renowned and domestic first-class research-oriented teaching hospital, and attaches great importance to scientific research. The first phase project plan to build a 1,300 ㎡ experimental center, and in the second phase a 100,000 ㎡ scientific research building will be built. In the future, the research funding will exceed 4% of the hospital's total GDP, and full-time researchers will take up 25% of the total staff.
SAHSYSU will implement an open management style with relatively independent clinical and scientific research relations, so that clinical and scientific researchers will focus on their respective areas of expertise. Clinical specialists expose clues and problems for scientific research while lab scientists work out problems for clinical services and lead clinical development through scientific research. Additionally, a translational scientific research platform is established to promote the clinical application of scientific research outcome, integrating the translational and basic and clinical ones. develop new technologies and new products, and promote the translational research outcomes into downstream industries. it is devoted to promoting the development of new drugs and new medical technologies, thus enhancing the level of medical science and technology innovation in Shenzhen, forming highland of medical industry innovation.
At present, the hospital has established the Institute of Digestive Medicine, the Platform for Cerebral Health Disease Research, Immunology Research Platform, Hematology Research Center, Precision Medicine Research Center, and Reversion of Multidrug Resistance for Cancer. On top of that, SAHSASU forges cooperation with the Shanghai Institute of Bioscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences to build a medical big data center. In 2018, 10 projects in SAHSYSU were funded by National Natural Science Foundations with a total direct funding of 4.29 million yuan, ranking in the leading position of Shenzhen medical and health institutions.
