When your kid is having a nosebleed,
you should try to find out where the blood is from.
Parents do not need to panic as it is quite common to have nosebleeds. No big deal.
For 90% of children, nosebleeds occur at the front end of nasal septum (Little’s area), where the vascular plexus is shallow, and the nasal mucosa of children is highly brittle, which is prone to mucosal erosion, capillary rupture and bleeding.

What may cause a nosebleed?
For children, nosebleeds may be caused by many factors, including nasal dryness, allergic reaction, nasal foreign body, blood system diseases, kidney diseases and unbalanced diet.
1. In dry seasons, the mucous membrane inside the nose will become dry and fragile, which is easy to rupture and lead to nosebleeds.
2. Another common cause is injury to the inside of the nose, such as blowing your nose violently, picking your nose too deeply or accidentally hitting your nose. These behaviors will stimulate the blood vessels in the nasal cavity, leading to nosebleeds. Therefore, children should try to avoid these behaviors, blow their noses gently and avoid picking their nose too hard.
3. An abnormal nasal structure will increase the risk of vascular damage in the nasal cavity, such as turbinate hypertrophy and curved nasal septum.
4. Certain drugs may cause nosebleeds. For example, the use of some anticoagulant drugs causes nosebleeds easily.

Why is it wrong to raise your head and stuff your nose with tissue paper?
Stuff your nose with tissue paper:
Generally, the local pressure of the tissue paper is not heavy enough to stop bleeding quickly. Repeated stuffing would probably rub the fragile bleeding nasal mucosa, increase the bleeding area and make the bleeding longer.
Besides, the tissue paper may stick to the blood scab. When the nosebleed stops and the tissue paper is taken out, it is likely that the wound will open again and continue to bleed.
Raise your head and lift your hand up:
When you had a nosebleed as a child, did anyone tell you to tilt your head back and raise your hand?In fact, these methods not only won’t do the trick, but also may lead to damages.
Head-up posture does not help stop bleeding. It only changes the direction of nosebleeds. If nosebleeds flow back to the throat and esophagus along the nasal cavity, they will eventually be swallowed into the stomach. If you swallow a lot of nosebleeds, it will cause nausea, vomiting (sometimes, a lot of brown bloody substances mixed with gastric juice), abdominal pain, pallor, or melena. And if the blood clot enters the trachea through the throat, it may cause the danger of suffocation!

Then what should we do?
In most cases, nosebleeds can be stopped by ourselves. Remember to stay calm and take the following steps when you are having a nosebleed:
1. Find a chair to sit down and lower your head a little forward.
2. Press the nasal alar on the bleeding side with your fingers, or pinch both nasal alars for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. At the same time, spit out the blood in the mouth to avoid swallowing accidentally.
Attention: After the nosebleed stops, don’t blow your nose violently, so as not to cause a nosebleed again.
Under what circumstances do you need to take your kid to a doctor?
Sometimes, nosebleed may also be one of the symptoms of some serious diseases. In the following circumstances, you should seek medical advice in time:
1. Nosebleeds lasting more than 30 minutes.
2. Nosebleeds caused by head trauma.
3. Nosebleeds caused by taking medicine, special chemicals or objects stuck in the nasal cavity.
4. Nosebleeds accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, dyspnea and other symptoms.
When the following circumstances occur,
you need to be alert to blood system diseases:
1. Nosebleeds occur frequently, with both nasal cavities bleeding and difficulty in stopping it.
2. Subcutaneous ecchymosis and submucosal bleeding often occur.
3. Hepatosplenomegaly.
4. Unexplained anemia, hematuria, renal function damage, etc.
5. Have a family history of blood system diseases.
?
How should we prevent nosebleeds?
1. Treat rhinitis in a scientific and standardized manner. For seasonal allergic patients with fixed attack time, preventive medication can be taken. Nasal preparations should be used correctly to avoid damaging the nasal septum.
2. Correct children’s habits, such as rubbing or picking their noseto help them avoid causing damage to their nasal mucosa.
3. Keep the room moist: use nasal lubricant properly; wear a mask during the allergic season and when the air pollution is serious, reduce?outdoor activities, use seawater to clean the nasal cavity after outdoor activities, and reduce allergen exposure.
